Frequently asked questions
What is the F&O ban period?
NSE moves a stock into the F&O ban period when combined open interest crosses the market-wide position limit (MWPL). While the name is banned, you cannot open new futures or options positions in it. Squaring off existing positions is still allowed.
Why does a stock enter the ban list?
Ban is an exchange risk control, not a comment on the company. It triggers when too much of the permitted open interest is already used. The stock leaves the list after open interest cools below the threshold on a subsequent trading day.
Can I trade a banned stock in cash?
The ban applies to the F&O segment. Equity delivery and, subject to margin, cash-market trades are separate. Always check the order ticket — a blocked F&O order does not mean the cash scrip is halted.
How often is this list updated?
This page uses the NSE F&O securities-ban file captured when the site was last built. The as-of date is the business date of that snapshot. Intraday additions appear after the next rebuild.
